"I thought going to drink Japanese whisky would be a bit like drinking a Welsh claret," Miller said of his first trip to Japan in 1999, Max Workouts when he was editor of Whisky Magazine. "I wondered 'Will my hosts be offended if I drink gin and tonic?'." Miller was soon converted but he found no one to share his enthusiasm with back in Britain, where Japanese whisky exports were practically non-existent. The turning point came in 2001, when Nikka's 10-year Yoichi single malt won "Best of the Best" at Whisky Magazine's awards. Japanese makers have stormed competitions ever since, with Suntory winning "Distiller of the Year" at the International Spirit Challenge for the third time in July and the Trophy prize for its 21-year Hibiki blend. The acclaim nudged Japan's distilleries to market overseas and sales jumped.

It said its three ships had ushered the Japanese fleet out of the Antarctic Treaty Zone, the internationally designated area below 60 degrees south latitude. "Within a day and a half, we have the entire whaling fleet in disarray," said Siddarth Chakravarty, the captain of one of the Sea Shepherd ships. Japan's Fisheries Agency, which oversees the annual hunt, said Tuesday that the whaling operation has not been halted. It said the fleet remains in the Southern Ocean, which is generally considered to cover a similar area to the Antarctic Treaty Zone. The agency declined to comment specifically on Sea Shepherd's claims or on the fleet's exact whereabouts. On Monday, Sea Shepherd published photos and videos that it said showed three harpooned Minke whales lying on the deck of the Nisshin Maru and another being butchered. The Australian government has challenged the Japanese whaling program in the International Court of Justice.

As part of the November deal, buyers of Iranian oil, most of whom are in Asia, are no longer required to continuously reduce purchases from the OPEC member to qualify for a waiver from U.S. sanctions every six months. Under Japanese law, 280 further islands without owners belong to the state and registering them will enable them to be better managed, Yamamoto said. The move by Japans government comes amid territorial disputes with China and South Korea that have raised tensions in East Asia. Ships and planes from China and Japan have tailed one another around a cluster of disputed East China Sea islands -- known as the Senkakus in Japan, and the Diaoyu islands in China -- since Japan official site bought three of them in 2012. China in November unnerved its neighbors by declaring an air defense identification zone in the East China Sea that overlaps with Japans zone and includes uninhabited islands claimed by both nations. Japan is made up of more than 6,000 islands and its combined territorial waters and exclusive economic zone are the sixth largest in the world, at approximately 4.47 million square kilometers (1.73 million square miles) in area, according to the Ministry of Defense. Ive been criticized by the opposition because we dont yet have information on all the remote islands, Yamamoto told reporters.

I believe our relationship will get even stronger by concluding the pact. Erdogan, who arrived in Tokyo on Monday with seven ministers and about 100 business leaders, said Japan and Turkey need to expand their trade, which currently amounts to less than $4 billion a year. Weve discussed necessary measures for improving the situation as early as possible, Erdogan said. Abe and Erdogan also signed a memorandum to cooperate on establishing a joint international university of science and technology in Istanbul, aiming to nurture experts in the field of nuclear energy. Abe offered Turkey an additional 43 billion in loans for construction of a subway line under the Bosporus Straits in Istanbul. Japan has already extended some 150 billion in loans for the project. It was their third summit, following meetings in May and October in Turkey. In the earlier meetings, Abe worked hard to sell Japans nuclear power infrastructure, a central pillar for his growth strategy.
